Traffic Stop Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department

This Tuesday, August 11, they are talking about ‘TURNING MOVEMENTS and REQUIRED SIGNALS’.

08-06-2019 Turning Movements and Required Signal

Using your signal prior to turning or changing lanes might seem like a minor detail, but not using your turn signals creates a safety hazard for yourself, other motorists, and pedestrians.

Signals are used to warn others of your intended movements and forgetting to signal can unknowingly turn a minor detail into a major problem.

STANDARD TRAFFIC ORDINANCE (STO) Sec. 54 (a), (b), (c) on Turning Movements and Required Signals says:

  • No person shall turn a vehicle or move right or left upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety, nor without giving an appropriate signal in the manner hereinafter provided.
  • A signal of intention to turn or move right or left when required shall be given continuously during and not less than the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle before turning.
  • No person shall stop or suddenly decrease the speed of a vehicle without first giving an appropriate signal, in the manner provided herein, to the driver of any vehicle immediately to the rear when there is an opportunity to give such a signal.

For YOUR SAFETY and THE SAFETY OF OTHERS, please remember to signal your intentions at least 100 feet before you make a lane change or a turn.

Do not let your lack of signaling ruin your day by causing a traffic collision.
