BUHLER – The McPherson High School girls tennis program opened their 2020 season with the junior varsity playing at the Buhler Junior Varsity Invitational and taking second place out of eight teams.

Host Buhler took the Invitational Championship with 26 team points while the JV Lady Bullpups finished second with 24. Circle with 19 and Goddard Eisenhower with 16 rounded out the top four.

Lady Pups Lakynn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale led the team as they went 4-0 on the day in number one doubles to take first place gold.

Kyndall Sandbo, playing at number one singles, finished the day 3-1 and in second place while Kinley Dietrich also went 3-1 in number two doubles to place third place.

The other Lady Bullpup doubles team of Lauren Rogers and Paige Stucky closed out their day with a 3-1 mark and took third place at number two doubles.

“It was great to finally be able to go out and compete,” explained Junior Varsity Coach Ricardo Sanchez. “Although the tournament looked a little different with all the COVID-19 guidelines, the teams and spectators did a wonderful job of adhering to them.

After the first four teams, other teams competing were Valley Center (10 points), Smoky Valley (5 points), Salina Central (4 points), and Pratt (2 points).

Coach Sanchez continued his post-game reflections by adding, “Having all of our players medal always makes for a great day. Half of our team are freshmen and they all had a great introduction to high school tennis. While Kyndall (Sandbo) ran into a particularly good senior from Buhler in the finals of her division, she showed a lot of grit out on the court. Our other two freshmen had a shaky start as nerves got the best of them, but they pushed that aside and went out and won the remaining three matches at 6-1 apiece.”

Concluding his reflections on the season opening matches, Coach Sanchez noted, “Our upperclassmen were great role models for the freshmen and showed what type of energy is needed to succeed on the courts.”
