WICHITA – The Elyria Christian School volleyball team kick started their 2020 season on Friday with a highly impressive straight set victory on the road over the Wichita Defenders.

After scoring a close 25-20 first match victory, the Lady Eagle spikers cruised to a dominating 25-6 second match win to score the straight set win.

Ryland Hawkinson and Alexus Swenson led the Lady Eagles as Hawkinson recorded seven digs and three kills while Swenson scored six aces.

It was a tougher battle for the Elyria junior varsity volleyball team as they scored an easy 25-11 first match win, then were nipped 22-25 in the second match before bouncing back for a 15-11 third set win and an overall victory.

Leading the junior varsity Lady Eagles were Julia Allen with her six digs, three kills and three aces, while Macy Reiff scored eight digs and three aces.

“I was really impressed with how both teams played,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Jayme Gardner. “Our junior varsity girls got down 8-0 in the third set but proved how much drive they have to pull out the four-point win.”

Coach Gardner finished her post-match reflections by adding, “Our varsity girls played hard all night. We are really working on giving 100% each point and being intentional with the ball, something they put into practice many times. We have a long way to go, but after tonight, I am excited to see where they are going to take us.”

The Lady Eagle volleyball team will return to the net on Tuesday, September 1 when they go on the road to Central Christian.
