LINDSBORG ā€“ In a late change of scheduling the Smoky Valley volleyball team opened their 2020 season at home with a quad against Hesston and Hillsboro on Saturday instead of traveling to Hoisington.

The Lady Vikings had to go three sets in the season opener with Hillsboro before losing the overall match. Smoky Valley lost the first set by just four points, 21-25, then bounced back to score a solid 25-18 win in set two before battling into overtime before losing set three 26-28.

With the second match of the day, Smoky Valley rolled past Hesston in straight sets 25-15 and 25-14.

Overall, for the day, McKinley Johnson rolled up 29 assists while Elyse Ramsey had 24. Abby Rose led the Lady Vikings in kills with 18 though Bri Franklin posted 12 and Addie Heitschmidt had 11.

For blocking, Bri Franklin scored three solo and eight assisted while Abby Rose had three solo and six assisted.

Kerington Haxton led the defense attack by scoring eight digs and posting nine successful serve/receive passes and Avery VanDerWege had five successful digs.

According to Lady Viking Head Coach Sharlene Ramsey, the girls served an 85% average in the Hillsboro matches while scoring an 89% average in serves during the Hesston match.

At the conclusion of all the matches for the day, Smoky Valley did take time to recognize the eight senior lady Vikings on the roster: Bri Franklin, Kerington Haxton, Addie Heitschmidt, McKinley Johnson, Whitley McElroy, Belle Peters, Elyse Ransey, and Madison Repp.

The Lady Viking spikers will return to the competitive court next Thursday, September 3 when they battle Abilene and Thomas More Prep on the road in Abilene.
