NELSON LEADS RETURNEES

By William

LITTLE RIVER – Despite the Little River High cross country team returning a large majority of the team, they will still be considered young as four of the top five returnees will be just sophomores.

Redskin Head Coach Karen Hull notes that the boys team will be built around sophomore Nathan Nelson who qualified to run at state in 2019 as just a freshman.

Joining Nelson for the boys team will be fellow sophomores Treyton Olander and Ryan Golden as the top three returnees.

For the Lady Redskin harriers, seniors Kylie Fox and Rylie Zeller will be joined by sophomores Kayla Fox and Addison O’Neill to make a solid foursome to build with.

“With the majority of the team returning, they will have an idea of what to expect in the course of the season and what it will take to compete,” noted Coach Hull. “All five returning runners made improvements every week last year and hopefully that will continue.”

When talking about the boys squad, Coach Hull commented, “With consistent effort and hard work, Nathan Nelson should be able to qualify for state again this year while Treyton Olander made huge gains last year and is stronger this season, so he has the ability to make a run for state as well.”

Coach Hull concluded her pre-season reflections by saying, “The team is working to build up their running base early on so that we can focus on improving the speed aspect of running. What they think is enough of a running base coming, and the reality of what it needs to be are things that we must continue to improve on each year. Mental toughness is also a key for distance runners so we will work to improve in that area every single day.”

The Little River cross country teams will open their 2020 season on Thursday, September 3 on the road at Pretty Prairie.
