CANTON – You will not see a whole lot of Canton/Galva in the team standings of cross country meets in 2020, but you most likely will see several mentions of individual Eagle performances at the same time.

Reason for that is that the Eagle cross country program is down to just three runners for the 2020 season, but of those three runners, two of them finished in the top 15 at the 2019 Class 2A Cross Country Championships.

Eagle Head Coach Lyle Silsby begins his 16th season coaching cross country and he may be short on numbers, but he has a dynamic duo in Morgan Becker and Christian Darrah.

Both Becker and Darrah are entering their junior seasons in 2020 after finishing out an amazing 2019 sophomore season in style as Becker placed eighth in the Class 2A state meet with a run of 17:25 while Darrah came in twelfth by running just nine seconds behind at 17:34.

“Both boys, Morgan (Becker) and Christian (Darrah) return from last season and both have trained very hard over the summer and are looking good so far in practice,” commented Coach Silsby. “Both are motivated to return to the state meet and to improve on their state times from last season.”

The only other runner out this season is senior Sarah Kendall.

Coach Silsby talked about the low numbers when he concluded his preseason reflections by adding, “Unfortunately, we only have three high school runners out this season, so we will not be running for any team honors, only individual. Both the boys are very dedicated and have worked hard over the summer. Barring any injury or COVID-19 shutdown, they have a good chance of making it back to state where they will try and improve on their times and placings from last season.”

The Eagle harriers are scheduled to kick off their 2020 season on Thursday, September 3rd at Tescott.
