ANDALE – After cruising to a victory in their first match of the day the McPherson High volleyball team stood firm and took down the number one team in Class 4A, Andale in both two-point sets in match two on Tuesday on the road at Andale.

In their first match of the day, the Lady Bullpups dominated Winfield while cruising to a straight, two-set win, 25-9, 25-11.

“Against Winfield we tried a different line-up to test out a new combination,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Christy Doile. “With the new line-up we were a bit choppy or out of synch, however we were still able to compete.”

In the second match of the day, McPherson, who came into the week ranked number-six in Class 5A, fought hard and managed to make it two straight set wins for the day by taking down Andale, 25-23, 25-23, the number one ranked team in Class 4A.

Coach Doile talked about the closeness of the two sets by saying, “Andale brought a good crowd, no fan limitation and it was also senior night for them. The matches were very tight. In set one I took a timeout when we were down 4-8, then they went ahead 4-10, but we came back and tied it at 16-16, 19-19, 21-21, 23-23 and then finally won 25-23. In set two my first timeout came when we were down 17-20 and we then came back to win again by two at 25-23.”

Rhian Swanson had a big night for the Lady Bullpups as she scored 24 kills, a pair of aces, recorded two blocks and made 11 digs. Other McPherson players with a solid night on the court were Katie Berg who scored 22 kills, Ella Schmid who also had a pair of aces, Brett Doile who led the team with in assists with 41 while Lauren Labertew had a team-high 17 digs and Taylor Casebeer made 11.

In concluded her post-game reflections, Coach Doile added, “Our toughness and grit were spot on tonight. It was not an easy match and we were not perfect as Andale is a tough team and I was impressed by how we handled the pressure. All our kids contributed, and we finished in the 20’s.”

The Lady Bullpup volleyball team will return to the competitive court next Tuesday, September 8th when they travel to Circle.
