MCPHERSON – It was a near perfect day for tennis on Tuesday as the McPherson girls tennis team hosted their own Junior Varsity Tennis Invitational and rolled to a team championship.

“Today was a great day for tennis as it was in the 80’s with very little wind involved,” said Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “It was a perfect day for the players and both Coach (Ricardo) Sanchez, and I were extremely proud of all our girls that played today.”

The junior varsity Lady Bullpups took first in three of the four divisions as they rolled up 30 team points to easily out distance runner-up Buhler who had 23. Hutchinson with 15 along with Great Bend and Valley Center tied at 13 rounded out the top four of the eight teams participating.

Three of the four McPherson entrees won their division, led by the doubles duo of Lakynn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale who went unbeaten at 4-0 on the day in #1 Doubles to take the first-place gold.

“Our top doubles team of Lakynn (Lippelmann) and Amethyst (Hale) will also find some varsity matches coming up with their second title in a junior varsity meet,” explained Coach Brown. “They are undefeated on the season and showed their dominance in pool play by winning 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. In their finals they came across a very efficient Valley Center team, but won 6-5, then showed a lot of fight in the finals after going down 0-3, they battled back to win 6-5 and gain the championship. You just love to watch girls who never quit out there.”

In # 2 Doubles, Lauren Rogers and Paige Stucky repeated the process and went 4-0 on the day to also earn a first-place gold.

“Our pair of freshmen, Lauren (Rogers) and Paige (Stucky) felt like they should have won their last junior varsity meet they played in and came in determined to get it down today,” added Coach Brown. “They did exactly that after gaining experience from that first meet, they showed their true form in pool play winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. In their championship match they played another outstanding Buhler team and out lasted them 6-4 for the championship.”

Not to be outdone by the two double tandems, Riggs Kuhn barreled through her competition at #1 Singles and won a first-place gold by going 4-0 as well.

Noting her outstanding play, Coach Brown said, “Riggs (Kuhn) showed why she will make a push for a spot on varsity as she was dominant in all four matches today, winning 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-2.”

In #2 Singles, Kinley Dietrich went 3-1 for the day in her matches and placed second.

“Kinley (Dietrich) in the number two singles spot, played fantastic in pool play by winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals of that division before running out of gas to a very good Buhler player in the finals,” noted Coach Brown.

Coach Brown concluded his reflections on the invitational by saying, “We had Raina (Schmidt), Tiaya (Young) and Loghan (Engelbrecht) also competed today as they filled in to help a Smoky Valley team that wasn’t able to bring a full squad. They gained valuable experience in what it will take to compete at a junior varsity level tournament.”

Schmidt went 1-3 for the day and finished sixth in #2 Singles while the duo of Young and Engelbrecht went 2-2 in their matches to place fifth at #2 Doubles.
