MCPHERSON – While it was not perfect, the McPherson girls tennis teams scored a first and third place finish at their own Invitational on Thursday in McPherson.

The Lady Bullpups Red team won the Invitational with 53 points while the Lady Bullpups White team placed third with 35 with Goddard Eisenhower finishing second with 38. Other teams competing were Salina Sacred Heart, Derby, Great Bend, Newton, and Valley Center.

Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown was pretty excited about the outcome despite not having any individual champions, “The team as a whole played outstanding. Out of the 12 girls we had playing, eight of them had a semifinal match and that is utterly amazing.”

The # 1 Doubles tandem of CeAnna Allen and Perrin Schneider led the McPherson white team by placing second with a 3-1 record for the day after losing to a solid Salina Sacred Heart team in the championship match, while Patty Huerta also went 3-1 on the day at # 1 Singles to place second as well when she lost to a favorite to win the Class 3-2-1A state championship.

“I will comment on our senior CeAnna Allen first,” noted Coach Brown. “I thought with everything she has gone through to start the season that she was absolutely awesome! She showed great senior leadership today playing with someone she has never played with before in Perrin Schneider. This was their first tournament ever playing together. I felt like they rolled in their first three matches and even jumped up on an exceptionally good Sacred Heart duo 5-2 in the championship match. But a proven Sacred Heart team that has already beaten a particularly good Wichita Bishop Carroll team and a very good Wichita Collegiate team stayed composed and battled back to out last CeAnna and Perrin 8-6.”

As for the performance of Huerta, Coach Brown said, “Patty (Huerta) showed her consistent play in singles again as well by making quick work in her first three matches before playing Lily Perrin, which is the heavy favorite to win the Class 3-2-1A State Championship, in the championship match.”

Riggs Kuhn also had a strong day for the Lady Bullpup white team as she went 3-1 and placed third at # 2 Singles. The # 2 Doubles duo of Taylor Berger and Madison Dobson went 2-2 and placed fourth.

“Riggs (Kuhn) also was unbelievable as well with her only loss coming at the hands of possible Class 3-2-1A state champion as well,” added Coach Brown. “She continues to show the field she is a contender regardless of her youth.”

The top placers for the Lady Bullpups white team was the # 1 Doubles tandem of Sydney Achilles and Carley Malm as they finished 3-1 for the day and placed third while the # 2 Doubles team of LaKynn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale went 2-2 and placed sixth. The white teams two single competitors were Grace Witte who placed eighth at # 1 Singles and Kyndall Sandbo who ended up 12th in # 2 Singles.

Coach Brown concluded his reflections on the Invitational by saying, “Doubles play from Maddie (Dobson), Taylor (Berger), Sydney (Achilles), Carley (Malm), LaKynn (Lippelmann), and Amethyst (Hale) showed off our depth in doubles. Every one of them was terrific today. Grace (Witte) and freshman Kyndall Sandbo gained valuable experience in playing in a varsity meet with so many state medalist and state qualifiers. Now we have a quick turn around by going to Salina on Saturday to compete with some of the best in the state.”

The Lady Bullpup tennis team plays on Saturday in Salina at the Salina Central Invitational.
