ABILENE – The Smoky Valley volleyball team went to Abilene on Thursday and came home with three consecutive, straight set victories over Abilene, Thomas More Prep and Concordia.

Against host Abilene, the Lady Vikings scored a two-set 25-16, 25-21 victory and then took down Thomas More Prep in straight sets 25-20, 25-10 before defeating Concordia in mirror image two sets 25-20, 25-20.

Smoky Valley Head Coach Sharlene Ramsey was excited about the team’s opening night activities, noting, “Our girls came out swinging and ready to play! It was a total team effort tonight and we played three extremely good teams who all have a rich history of volleyball success.”

McKinley Johnson had a solid overall performance as she led the Lady Vikings in assists with 34 while also hitting 42/42 on her serves and making seven digs. Elyse Ramsey recorded 32 assists, made seven digs, and went 21/24 on serves that included two aces.

Another star of the evening was Addie Heitschmidt as she went 21/24 on serves while scoring three aces, recorded 13 kills, made 15 digs, and had one solo block. Abby Rose led the team in kills with 19, went 18/20 on serves with a pair of aces, recorded 13 digs, and made three solo blocks while assisting on two more.

Other top performances came from Bri Franklin who hit 24/26 on serves with two aces, while also making 15 kills, three digs and two assisted blocks. Audrey Bolda and Kerington Haxton each made 13 digs while Bolda also scored 12 kills and went 17/19 on serves with two aces.

Bolda led the team in ‘serve receive passes on target’ with 26 while Rose made 17, Haxton 15 and Heitschmidt 12.

Coach Ramsey concluded her reflections on the big night by discussing the team highlights and saying, “Our setters distributed the ball very well and our attacking/blocking game was incredible. We have been working on defense and tonight, it definitely paid off. Kerington (Haxton) took charge of the back row with her quick feet and made so many great plays. We finished the night 3-0 and left with more confidence than what we walked in with!”

Next up for the Lady Viking spikers will be a road trip on Tuesday, September 8th to Nickerson.
