LINDSBORG – The Smoky Valley cross country teams opened their 2020 season with a bang as hosted their own invitational and won both the boys and girls team divisions.

It was pure domination by the Viking boys as they ran away from the competition as they had five runners place in the top six, led by senior Ryan Heline, plus juniors Lukas Apel and Justice Gardner who all placed first, second and third.

Heline ran a spectacular 16:38.42 while Apel finished with an 18:14.60 and Gardner ran the course in 18:29.88. Junior Garrett Huffman and senior Stephen Peterson placed fifth and sixth. The other two varsity runners, freshman Samuel Peterson and sophomore Tytus Reed both placed in the top 15 at 10th and 15th.

The boys dominated the team standings as well, winning the invitational with 15 points while Hesston had 46, Ellinwood had 82 and Lyons had 142. Hillsboro also had runners in the meet though not enough to score team points.

For the Lady Vikings, junior Gracie Lambert finished second to Ellinwood’s Erin Hammeke with a run of 21:05.81. The Smoky Valley girls placed all five runners in the top seven as sophomore Kenzie Heline placed fourth, senior Kajsa Peterson was fifth, sophomore Olivia Bengtson placed sixth and junior Lydia Peterson ran in seventh place.

While the Lady Vikings scored the team championship with 24 points, only Ellinwood had enough runners to earn team points and they scored 34. Other teams running were Hillsboro, Hesston, and Lyons.

First year Smoky Valley Head Coach Jay Myers was pleased with the outcome of the team, saying, “We had a great start to our year in beautiful weather and a fun course to run. Lots of solid efforts out there today.”
