MALTBIE THROWS FOR 4 SCORES

By William

GOESSEL – Picking up where they left off at the end of the 2019 season, the Canton/Galva football team went on the road for their 2020 season opener and dominated Goessel to the tune of a single half, 54-0 whitewash.

It took the Eagles a few seconds over three minutes into the game before they scored for the first time on a 46-yard pass from Garrett Maltbie to Tyson Struber. While the conversion was no good, Canton/Galva was up 6-0 and just getting started.

Brayden Collins scored the Eagles second touchdown of the opening quarter on a 17-yard run before Maltbie connected with Struber again for another score, this time from seven yards out. Maltbie tossed one two-point conversion to Cason Mastre while Brandon Huff barreled in for the other and Canton/Galva was up 22-0 at the end of one quarter of play.

Maltbie, a starter for the first time while replacing all-state quarterback Landon Everett, threw for two more touchdowns in the second quarter with one being a 30 yarder to Struber and the final one being a 10 yarder to Braison Alcala. Collins added a 15-yard run for a score and Struber intercepted his first pass of the season and rambled in for his fourth score of the game. By the time you added in two-point conversion runs by Huff, Maltbie and Ryder Norstrom plus one on a pass from Maltbie to Struber, you had the Eagles with a 54-0 lead on the scoreboard which ended the game at halftime.

With the loss of Everett to graduation many were wondering if Maltbie could step in without much of a hitch and he more than proved he could as he finished the game with 135 yards passing by completing eight of his nine attempts while throwing for four touchdowns and then running for another 37 yards on just four carries.

Struber, an all-stater as a sophomore in 2019, hauled in four passes for 101 yards and the three scores to lead the Eagles offense, while Collins rambled for 91 yards on just 10 carries and his two touchdowns.

Brandon Huff and Conner Koehn led the Eagle defense with five and four tackles each as they held Goessel to just 107 yards of total offense on 32 plays while causing and recovering two fumbles and getting the interception that Struber returned for a score.

Canton/Galva will play their first home game of the season next Friday, September 11th, when they play host to Rural Vista who lost 60-12 to Solomon in their season opener.
