TESCOTT – On Thursday, September 3, the Inman Teuton cross country team made their 2020 debut at the Tescott Invitational run at the John Hutchinson Memorial Course in Tescott.

Teuton Head Coach Jay Parsons reflected on the first meet of the season by saying, “I know as a coach, hopefully the runner too, I look forward to the first meet of the season. It is a chance to see where everyone is in terms of conditioning and preparation. It also give the new runners a chance to experience what it takes to run in a competitive race. I wasn’t looking for any particular time and/or place since this is the first meet of the season. Therefore, my goal for the team was to finish the race and compete the best they can and everyone did just that.”

The Lady Teutons had but two runners competing with junior Hannah Martisko earning a meet medal by finishing seventh with a run of 23:28.80 while freshman Lacie Baxter ran a 33:15.40 in her first ever varsity race which Coach Parsons was pleased with while noting that it gives her something to build on.

For the boys, three Teutons ran the varsity race with senior Peter Buller having the top finish with a run of 21:07.80 which was good to place 18th. Fellow senior Brenton Thiessen finished in 21st with a run of 21:30.00 while freshman Riley Stallings placed 37th with a run of 28:27.10. Sophomore Drew Folkerts ran in the junior varsity race and was the top runner with a time of 20:03.70.

“In the boy’s varsity race, Peter (Buller) finished in the medals by placing 18th,” added Coach Parsons. “Brenton (Thiessen) finished 21st, just one place outside the medals. Both Peter and Brenton are ahead of where they were at start of last season and I think that is great for the both of them while it shows signs of them having a great senior season. Riley (Stallings), just a freshman got his first competitive race and now has something to built on while Drew (Folkerts) ran the junior varsity race and like the others ran a very good race for the first time out.”

Also running at Tescott was the Inman junior high cross country team and the lone Junior Lady Teuton was Addison Wedel who finished 12th with a run of 7:44.20. For the Junior Teuton boys, Tyler Martisko placed sixth with a run of 6:13.70 while Samuel Brensing ran a 7:00.90 which was good for 13th, Creighton Friesen ran a 7:06.90 and placed 14th, and Riley Roots finished 18th with a run of 8:29.90.

Coach Parsons concluded his reflections of the team’s first run of the year by saying, “Overall, I was pleased with the start of the racing season. I saw some things that if I can communicate to the runners and get them to understand we will become better runners, more consistent and more competitive.”

Next up for the Teuton harriers will be on Thursday, September 10 when they run at the always competitive Hesston Invitational. Due to the pandemic, the format for the meet in Hesston has been adjusted and the girls will race at 11:05 a.m. while the boys will run at 11:30 a.m.

Also, on Thursday, the Teutons Volleyball team won once again with a sweep of two matches with Marion.

The Teuton spikers  went three sets both times in beating Marion, willing match one 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 before closing out the day winning in another three sets after losing the first set, 21=25, 25-11, 27-25.
