LINDSBORG – It was not a good 2020 season and home opener on Friday for the Smoky Valley football team as they suffered issues with turnovers and stopping the run as Halstead powered their way to a dominating 46-0 win over the Vikings.

The visitors roared out to a 24-0 first quarter lead and then added scores in each of the final three quarters for the 46-0 shutout of Smoky Valley.

One of the issues plaguing the Vikings all night was the lack of stopping the Dragon running game as they powered their way to 346 yards rushing on just 30 carries while scoring five or their six touchdowns on runs of 54, 87, 64, 31, and 37 yards. Smoky Valley was unable to stop the legs of Lakin Farmer as he carried the ball just 11 times for Halstead but picked up 264 yards and four scores.

Overall, Smoky Valley had the ball for the game a full nine minutes longer than Halstead, but only managed 120 total yards in offense compared to the Dragons 375 despite running 15 more offensive plays.

Jake Lucas had the start at quarterback for the Vikings and only managed to complete five of fifteen passes for just 38 yards while throwing three interceptions, one of which was returned for a score. All five of his pass completions went to Haven Lysell-Stewart, one of the bright spots of the Viking offense.

Of the 82 yards of rushing that Smoky Valley accumulated, 61 of them came on nine carries by Trystan Stambaugh, another one of the bright spots for the Vikings offense. Problem with the running game came with dropping the ball for six fumbles and despite not losing any of the fumbles, each one shut down any possible offensive momentum.

Lysell-Stewart also led the defense with 5.5 tackles which included 2.5 times for a loss of yardage. Lucas and Kort Sjogren also contributed with five and four tackles.

Next up for the Smoky Valley football team will be another home game on Friday, September 11 when Haven comes to town.
