SALINA – The McPherson High freshman (9th Grade) football team put 58 straight points on the scoreboard Monday afternoon to hammer Salina South 58-8 for a road victory in the 2020 season debut.

After giving up a touchdown and two-point conversion early on in the first quarter, Owen Fetsch put the Junior Pups on the scoreboard with a 55-yard scoring run, which along with a Fetsch throwing a completion to Gavin Wedel for the two-point conversion, tied the game at 8-8.

Fetsch then hooked up with Blaise Hoover for a score and after Teegan Haines added a two-point conversion on another pass from Fetsch, the Junior Pups found themselves up 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.

McPherson added another two scores in the second quarter on a 35-yard run by Fetsch and a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown by Javyn Alexander to give them a commanding 28-8 advantage going into the halftime break.

Alexander put two scores in the books in the third quarter on a 15-yard scoring run and then returning an interception for a score, while Kaden Harold added another touchdown on a five-yard run. When you add in three two-point conversions on passes from Fetsch to Drew Waner, a run by Jayce Schriner and a pass to Wedel from Kreighton Kanitz, the Junior Pups put up 24 third quarter points to head into the final quarter of play with a 52-8 lead.

Xavier Windburn added on a scoring run of 24-yards in the fourth quarter to give McPherson their final 50-point, 58-8 victory.

Freshman Coach Heath Gerstner was happy for the team as he noted in his post-game reflections by saying, “I was excited for our freshman to get a nice win on an extremely hot night in Salina. The thing we as a staff were most pleased with is how well we played as a team. It was hot, and we had to rotate guys constantly. We played everyone and everyone played hard. We will have some mistakes to fix for sure, but it was fun to see these young Pups flying around.”

The freshman Bullpups will have their home opener next Monday, September 14 when they play host to Circle.
