ELYRIA – The Elyria Christian High volleyball team hosted Wakefield on Tuesday and split a pair of matches.

The Lady Eagles won the first match in straight sets 25-19, 25-20 before losing in the second match in straight sets to Wakefield, 23-25, 20-25.

In the first match, Kylee Penner led the Lady Eagles with six kills while Alexus Swenson recorded five digs and scored three aces.

It was Ryland Hawkinson with the big match for Elyria in the second battle as she recorded eight digs, had four kills and made two solo blocks while Kathleen Rohaus contributed three aces.

“We did just what we needed to do to win,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Jayme Gardner. “Tonight, we let ourselves get down easily and didn’t communicate the way that we needed to and that was across the board for both the junior varsity and varsity. Luckily both teams were able to get a win under us, but we have got a lot to work on before our next game. Communication is such a huge part of the game and we did not have it tonight.”

In the junior varsity match, the Lady Eagles scored a straight set win over Wakefield, 25-23, 25-17, with Julia Allen leading the team by scoring three aces and recording five digs. Kenna Cass also recorded five digs as well.

Coach Gardner concluded her post match reflections by adding, “Hopefully, we will look back at tonight as a hurdle that we overcame and become a different team tomorrow. These girls have the ability to be a great team, I just don’t think we believe it yet.”

Next up for the Elyria Christian volleyball team will be an appearance on Saturday, September 12 in the Solomon Tournament.
