STRUBER, MALTBIE, COLLINS COMBINE FOR 7 SCORES

By William

MOUNDRIDGE – It was a late change in the schedule and venue for both the Moundridge and Canton/Galva football teams as they were left with no opponents earlier this week due to injury and pandemic issues so the former cross-county rivals got together and schedule a matchup that has not happened since 2005 when both were 11-man teams in the old Heart of America League.

By the time they reached halftime, many Wildcat fans may have been wondering if the late schedule change should have maybe been avoided as the Eagles rolled over Moundridge 62-6.

The Canton/Galva offense exploded in the first quarter with three long scores as Garrett Maltbie connected with Tyson Struber for touchdown passes covering 28 and 18 yards before Maltbie took it upon himself to find the end zone on a 44-yard ramble with two minutes yet to go in the quarter. Combine that with two-point conversions on runs by Brayden Collins and Maltbie along with a short pass from Maltbie to Tyler Rummel and the Eagles had a 24-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of play.

Somehow Moundridge managed to score on a three-yard run by Joseph Schrag a little over two minutes into the second quarter to shorten the score to just 24-6, though it was as close as the Wildcats would get.

Maltbie connected with Struber on the Eagles first offensive play after the Wildcat score and Struber sprinted 65 yards into the end zone and the declawing began.

Within three minutes of that score the Eagles Brayden Collins scored on a 26 yard run the next time they had the ball and when the Eagle defense pinned Moundridge deep close to their own goal line, Keaton Littrell brought down Wildcat quarterback Corbin Unruh for a safety and suddenly the score had ballooned to 42-6 with nearly seven minutes yet to play in the half.

Collins and Brandon Huff each scored on runs of 28 and 1 yard while Struber struck from the defensive side when he returned an interception for another score to give the Eagles the final 62-6 half game victory.

Amazingly, the Eagles only had the ball for 17 offensive plays while the Wildcats had offensive opportunities 43 times despite the score. Canton/Galva recorded 280 yards in total offense while their defense held Moundridge to just 91 yards or just 2.1 yards per play.

Maltbie led the Eagle offense with 111 yards of passing on just three completions in five attempts, with all three going to Struber and touchdowns. Collins and Maltbie split time running the ball with Collins carrying seven times for 89 yards and Maltbie gaining 79 yards on just four carries.

The Eagle defense was busy as they recorded three quarterback sacks, made six plays account for a loss of yardage, forced three fumbles, and of course had the interception which Struber returned for a score. Struber and Collins each recorded six tackles in the game while Keaton Littrell had 5.5, including his safety, and both Ryder Norstrom and Tyler Rummel had four.

The glimpses of hope for the Wildcats came from quarterback Corbin Unruh, who despite being harassed throughout the game by the Eagle defense still managed to complete six passes for 59 yards and a touchdown, with Jon Schlosser being on the receiving end of three of those for 53 yards. Brayden Conquest and Braden Schmidt led the Moundridge running game with 24 and 20 yards, respectively. Joaquin Huff topped the Wildcat defense with four tackles.

The Eagles will continue to prove why they should be the team to beat as they look to reclaim a second state title as they to on the road again next Friday, September 18 to play Washington County. Canton/Galva has now outscored opponents 116-6 in their first two games. Washington County is also 2-0 on the season as they defeated Bennington 36-16 on Friday.

As for the Wildcats, they will be looking to kick start their offense as they have been outscored 108-6 in their first two games when they travel to Bennington on Friday, September 18. Bennington is 1-1 as they lost to Washington County on Friday 16-36.
