JOHNSON, BLANK, DEFENSE LEAD INMAN

ELLINWOOD – After a heartbreaking loss in week one to Hutchinson Trinity, the Inman High football team took to the field on Friday wanting to prove how good they can be and they did just that as they dismantled Ellinwood on the road 67-0.

“I was incredibly proud of how our guys bounced back from a tough loss at Trinity last week,” explained Teuton Head Coach Lance Sawyer. “I thought we came into the game with a lot of energy and confidence. We were able to jump on them early and we never let up. A week ago, we struggled to control the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball, but tonight we did both. We were really good in all three facets of the game.”

Jumping on Ellinwood early is an understatement as the Teutons put five touchdowns and 35 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter. They scored on runs by Kyler Konrade and Kendyn Blank while Tanner Heckel returned an interception for a score and Derick Johnson scored twice on an interception and a pass from quarterback Jace Doerksen.

A pair of touchdown runs by Kendyn Blank and another scoring pass from Doerksen to Johnson gave Inman another 20 points in the second quarter as the Teutons took a staggering 55-0 advantage into the halftime break.

While Talon Welch and Harrison Brunk added a pair of scoring runs in the third and fourth quarters respectively to make the final score of 67-0, it was the Teuton defense that was the true story of the game.

Inman held the host team of Ellinwood to just three yards of total offense on 38 plays, including an eye-popping minus-seven yards rushing on 24 attempts. Eleven Teutons put numbers next to their name on the defensive stat sheet.

Coach Sawyer handed out a lot of praises for the defensive play when he said, “Our defense was great! We were able to shut them down early in the possessions and forced a lot of third and longs. We were able to force a punt on their first possession which Kyler Konrade returned back to the five-yard line. On their next possession, Derick Johnson returned an interception for a touchdown and then Tanner Heckel returned another interception for a score on their next possession. We only had run one play of offense and we were up 21-0. We played great as a unit.”

Offensively, Doerksen threw the ball just five times and completed all five for 111 yards and two touchdowns to Johnson on plays covering 30 and 38 yards. Kendyn Blank scored three times running the ball while covering 74 yards total for the night on just six carries while Talon Welch and Harrison Brunk each ran for 49 and 46 yards and one score respectively on just five carries for each.

“Offensively, our goal for this game was to get the line back on track,” added Coach Sawyer. “They did well creating holes for our backs. Kendyn (Blank) did a great job making a cut and getting down field while we also got some good runs from Harrison (Brunk) as well as Talon (Welch).”

Coach Sawyer concluded his post-game reflections by noting, “We are excited to get back on the right side of things. We still have a lot to improve on, but this game will give us a lot of confidence moving forward.”

Now 1-1 on the season, the Teutons will be back on the road next Friday, September 18, when they travel to Salina Sacred Heart who is 0-2 after losing to Ell-Saline 34-0 on Friday and having been outscored 76-6 in their first two games.
