SALINA – It was almost business as usual for the McPherson High girls tennis program as they scored a championship trophy on Saturday at the Salina South Invitational.

The Lady Bullpups finished with 61 team points to out duel tourney host Salina South by five points. Salina Central, Maize South and Maize rounded out the top five of a loaded with power tennis teams.

“Today was a beautiful day for playing tennis,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “Could not have asked for a better day weather wise.”

While no McPherson players won an individual championship, Patty Huerta placed second in the singles division as she finished out the day 3-1.

“Patty (Huerta) played some of her best tennis today,” explained Coach Brown. “It was awesome to watch her semifinal match against Salina Central’s Janae Montoya. That was the best I have seen her play. It was some of the best error free tennis I have seen from our girls in a while and she stepped up big on crucial points in the match. After such a long intense match it was difficult to duplicate that against Central’s Callie Sanborn in the finals. Sanborn has a style of play that can keep you on the court for a very long period of time, so to have to play girls back to back like that is very difficult but Patty (Huerta) was awesome today.”

Despite finishing 2-2 for the day in placing sixth, Coach Brown had much to say about the play of Sydney Achilles, “She didn’t disappoint in her singles play either as she was the comeback kid today. Today was her first tournament playing singles so she was a little slow out of the gare going down 1-6 in the first round before making a massive comeback and winning seven straight games to put her in the quarterfinals.”

In the doubles division, the Lady Bullpups duo of CeAnna Allen and Perrin Schneider ended the day winning three of four matches and placed second when they lost to number one seed Illiana Armbrust and Alexxa Nunemaker of Salina South.

Losing to the eventual champions in the semifinals was McPherson’s other doubles tandem of Taylor Berger and Maddie Dobson as they ended the day 2-2 and placed fourth.

“Both our doubles teams were solid once again by both making it to the semifinals,” noted Coach Brown. “CeAnna (Allen) and Perrin (Schneider) took it a step further by getting to the finals while Taylor (Berger) and Maddie (Dobson) lost a tough semifinal to the number one seed. My hope with the doubles is that they start to realize how good they really are! Sometimes I feel like I have more confidence in what they can do than they believe in themselves. But it is a process and we continue to get better each week.”

Coach Brown concluded his reflections by reminding us that, “Our goal is to hopefully be playing our best tennis for League, Regionals, and State!!”

Next up for the Lady Bullpup netters will be right back at it on Monday, September 14 when they travel to a multiple school meet at Haysville/Campus.
