GYPSUM – The Smoky Valley High volleyball team proved why they should be ranked fourth in Class 3A as they traveled to Gypsum on Saturday and promptly won three straight-set matches over Concordia, Circle and Beloit.

In the first match of the quad against Concordia, the Lady Vikings dominated with 25-16, 25-11 wins. Aubrey Boldra led Smoky Valley in serves by hitting on 13/14 while the team hit 46/48 overall. Addie Heitschmidt made six kills, McKinley Johnson recorded six digs and Boldra, Abby Rose and Bri Franklin each had a pair of serve aces.

The second match of the day for the Lady Vikings pitted them against the current third ranked team in Class 4A, the Circle Thunderbirds. In a tough battle of highly ranked teams, Smoky Valley came out ahead in straight sets, winning the first one 25-20 before closing out the match victory 25-23 in the second set.

Once again the team did outstanding in serves scoring making 47/50 with Elyse Ramsey hitting a perfect 12/12 and Johnson connecting on 10/10. Franklin and Rose made eight and six kills respectively while Boldra recorded 10 digs and Kerington Haxton had eight.

By powering past Beloit in straight sets, 25-17, 25-20, the Lady Vikings closed out the day unbeaten in all three matches.

On serves the team finished 41/45 with Heitschmidt hitting 11/12 and scored nine kills while Franklin was 8/8. Boldra scored seven digs while both Rose and Franklin made five kills and had three solo blocks.

Lady Viking Sharlene Ramsey noted that not only did the varsity have an outstanding day, the Lady Viking junior varsity squad one traveled to Lyons and scored wins over both Lyons and Sterling while the Lady Viking junior varsity squad two went north to Minneapolis and went unbeaten in three matches over Minneapolis, Riley County and Hesston.

For the day all the Smoky Valley volleyball teams together went 8-0.

For the season the Lady Viking varsity is now 9-1 and will head to Hillsboro on Tuesday, September 15 to battle Hillsboro and Lyons.

Against Beloit:

Serves = Addie Heitschmidt had 11/12; Bri Franklin had 8/8.
