SALINA – The McPherson Middle School 7th grade volleyball team opened their 2020 season with three wins and one loss on the road in Salina against Emporia and Salina South.

The 7th grade ‘A’ Lady Pups scored two straight set victories when they handled Emporia, 25-17, 25-13 before closing out the road trip by taking down host Salina South in straight sets as well, 15-18, 25-21.

“I thought the girls did an awesome job for their first matches today,” noted Head Coach Abby Bradstreet. “They had a rough start and it took a while to get the kinks worked out and into a rhythm, but by the end of our match with Salina South, I feel good about where we are and the direction we are heading.”

Coach Bradstreet continued her reflections on the season opener by saying, “We had some great digs and hits at the net and the girls hustled really well during both matches. We need to do some work on communicating better as a team and covering at the net, but overall, I am immensely proud of how the girls performed today. They are a great group and I am extremely excited to see where the season takes them!”

In the 7th grade ‘B’ team matches, the Junior Lady Pups dismantled Emporia in their first set 25-4 before hanging on for a 25-23 straight set match victory.

Unfortunately, in the second match against Salina South, they lost both sets 14-25 and 21-25.

“For our first time out in competition, the 7th grade ‘B’ team show great promise,” explained ‘B’ team Coach Chelsey McCasland. “Our serving was strong in the first set leading us to a win over Emporia and they fought back to win our second one. Salina South proved to be a tougher opponent and we struggled to find consistency. The girls are flexible, open to trying new things, and learn quickly. I am looking forward to seeing our confidence improve as the season progresses.”

It will be a quick turnaround for the 7th grade Junior Lady Pup volleyball team as they return to the competitive court on Tuesday with a trip to Abilene.
