EMPORIA – It was a good and bad 2020 season debut for the McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball teams as they traveled to Emporia and split four matches with Emporia and Salina South.

The 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team had a rough debut as they lost in straight sets to Salina South, 18-25, 19-25 before battling host Emporia for three very tough, very close sets before losing 21-25, 25-23, 12-15.

“It took us a while to find our groove and while we could not consistently stay in it, I definitely saw some positives tonight,” explained Head Coach Shelley Cooper-Bohme. “We were able to pass balls to our setters and get some hits, and we were getting touches on blocks. Unfortunately, we had way too many missed serves, net violations, and other unforced errors that came into play.”

Coach Cooper-Bohme added, “After a delayed start to the season this was a tough way to start out, but finally being able to play showed us what areas we need to focus on. These girls have some amazing potential, and I can not wait to see them improve this season.”

It was a better outcome for the 8th grade ‘B’ team as they went lost their first set, 21-25 to Salina South before bouncing back to take the next two sets, 25-17, 15-5, to win the match.

In their match with host Emporia, the Junior Lady Pups won in straight sets 25-17. 25-10 to finish their season opening day unbeaten.

“We were very glad to get these first games out of the way,” noted ‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham. “The girls were very flexible with changing rotations on the spot and learning new COVID rules. I am proud of them and ready to play again tomorrow.”

It will be a quick turn around for the 8th grade Junior Lady Pup spikers as they return to the competitive court again on Tuesday when they play host to Salina Lakewood and Abilene. The ‘A’ team will play their matches at McPherson Middle School while the ‘B’ team will host their matches at the McPherson Community Building.
