WAKEFIELD – While they traveled to Wakefield for a quad, the Elyria Christian volleyball team played matches with Canton/Galva and Goessel and returned home with an even split of one win and one loss.

Against the Lady Eagles of Canton/Galva, the Elyria Lady Eagles scored a 25-12, 25-23 straight set victory with Kilynn Starburg and Ryland Hawkinson led the way with seven and six kills each. Hawkinson also recorded nine digs.

In the second match of the day, the Lady Eagles of Elyria struggled a times lost to Goessel in straight sets 10-25, 19-25 despite Ryland Hawkinson recorded 11 digs and Kylee Penner getting four blocks. Alexus Swenson also contributed five digs.

“We played pretty well against Canton/Galva,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Jayme Gardner. “Our intensity and energy kind of jumped around during that game, so I think that didn’t help us start very well against Goessel. Goessel is a good team that found some weaknesses that we could not shake. In the second set, we had finally found our groove, but we spotted them too many points to make a full comeback. I believe that we are continuing to learn the importance of every points and it will only make us better in the end.”

In the junior varsity matches, Elyria tied Canton/Galva 21-25, 25-20 as Mina Aroum recorded four kills and three aces and Macy Reiff had five digs. In the JV second match they lost to Goessel 7-25, 10-25. Julia Allen led the JV Lady Eagles against Goessel with four digs.

Next up for the Elyria Lady Eagle volleyball team will be Tuesday, September 22 when they travel to Rural Vista.
