SWANSON, BERG, DOILE LED TEAM

MCPHERSON – The McPherson High volleyball team continued to take advantage of their two big guns, Rhian Swanson, and Katie Berg, as they rolled in both their season home opening matches on Tuesday against Rose Hill and Augusta.

The Lady Bullpups hammered away at Augusta and took a straight set, 25-17, 25-21, victory before dismantling Rose Hill in straight sets, 25-13, 25-15.

Seniors Swanson and Berg, both of whom have already committed to play volleyball at Division I level next season, led McPherson by combining for an amazing 45 kills with Swanson recording 24 and Berg putting 21 by her name in the scorebook. Swanson also recorded a dozen digs for the night as well.

The Lady Bullpups also received some tremendous play from Brette Doile as she had credit for a whopping 40 assists on the evening while Taylor Casebeer led the team in digs with 23. Others who had solid nights on the stat sheet were Ella Schmid who made four service aces while Lauren Labertew had 11 digs and a pair of blocks.

It was not as good an evening for the Lady Bullpups junior varsity as they scored a straight set win over Augusta, 25-19, 25-23 before going three sets with Rose Hill. McPherson won the first set only to lose the final two sets by a total of just seven points, 25-10, 21-25, 22-25.

Among the team leaders in the junior varsity matches were Kelcie Kynaston and Aimee Leblanc who each recorded eight service aces.

“I though we did a nice job all around against Augusta,” noted Lady Bullpup junior varsity coach Katelyn Loecker. “Aimee (Leblanc) served seven aces to give our team a spark at key points in the match while our two juniors, Kaylee Zeitlow and Avery Strathman were great leaders for us all night, especially during times of adversity. Credit goes to Rose Hill in the second match for not backing down after one set. We will study film to see what areas we need to improve on before our tournament this upcoming weekend.”

The Junior Varsity spikers go to Goddard for a Goddard Eisenhower junior varsity tournament on Saturday, September 19.

McPherson’s varsity Lady Bullpup volleyball is now number six in Class 5A and will return to the competitive court next Tuesday, September 22 when they travel to Augusta to tangle with the Orioles and El Dorado in a triangular before heading to the annual battle in Newton on Saturday, September 26 at the Newton Lady Railer Invitational.
