WINFIELD – It was a huge win and builder of confidence for the very young McPherson High boys soccer team on Tuesday as they went on the road and scored a solid 6-0 shutout victory over Winfield.

Bullpup Head Coach Chris Adrian was excited as he explained, “Tonight was a great win and a confidence builder for this team. The passing and composure with the ball was much better and something the guys are working hard at improving.”

For a team that so far this season had seen struggles on offense, the Bullpups exploded for five goals in the first half with Connor Olson and Cody Achilles each scoring a pair of them while Kayden McVicker had the other. Achilles was credited with two goal assists as well while Olson and Caden Hardgrave each had on assist.

Olson topped the day with his third goal in the second half to give him a hat trick, while the defense played solid and helped Kelvin Peterson get his and the teams first shutout of the season. Peterson only needed one save for the game. The Bullpup offense pelted the Winfield goalkeepers for a total of 14 shots on goal in the game.

“Connor (Olson) had a breakout game and show what he is capable of scoring by getting three goals and an assist,” noted Coach Adrian. “I was really impressed with the way the team defended and felt that Drew Wilson had his best game of the season and was fantastic on defense as well as supporting the attack on offense. Our defense was rewarded with their first shutout of the season.”

The Bullpup junior varsity fell short and lost a close 1-0 game.

Coach Adrian concluded his post-game reflections by looking to what was ahead and commenting, “Thursday we will face a really strong Salina Central team and the test will be to see if we can play with the same level of confidence on the ball against a really strong opponent.”
