SCHUCKMAN, MCVICKER LEAD MCPHERSON

SALINA – The young kids may be growing up as proven on Thursday when the young McPherson High boys soccer team traveled to Salina and scored a 2-1 overtime victory over Salina Central.

“I am so incredibly proud of this team and how they competed tonight,” exclaimed Bullpup Head Coach Chris Adrian. “It was our sixth straight road game and we were playing without Cody Achilles who was busy running cross country.”

The Bullpups got off to a near perfect start when Caden Hardgrave beat his defender and slid a ball across to Kayden McVicker who planted into the corner of the net to give McPherson and early 1-0 advantage. One issue from the score came from the fact that McVicker was injured during the scoring play which meant the Bullpups had to finish the game down two center forwards which was not something Coach Adrian was planning on.

As Coach Adrian pointed out during his post-game reflections, “The game then became a midfield battle with neither team really creating a lot of great chances to score during the run of play. With limited subs, the boys worked their tails off and competed for every ball.”

Salina Central played a strong game on their long throw-ins and corner kicks which eventually gave them a score off a corner kick. After Bullpup goalkeeper Kelvin Peterson came up with two huge saves late in the game, the contest went into overtime.

On the kick-off to begin the overtime period, Connor Olson landed a perfect long ball to Cade Hardgrave who won the challenge for the ball and played it across to Reid Schuckman who landed a kick into the net for the game winner and his first varsity goal just 12-seconds into the overtime. Hardgrave ended the game with two assists on goals while Peterson made a total of four saves in net while the Bullpups only got off three shots on goal for the evening.

Coach Adrian concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “It was a great moment for this team and one they fully deserved. It is hard to single out one or two players from this game because they all played so well and competed so hard. Tonight, these boys showed what BULLPUP soccer looks like.”

In the junior varsity game the Bullpups tied Salina Central 1-1 with Conor Eickbush scoring the McPherson goal from an assist by Dayveon Crawford.

Next up for the Bullpup kickers will be on Tuesday, September 22 when they play host to Augusta.
