BUHLER – Still looking for some consistency the McPherson High girls tennis team still managed three second-place finishes which were enough to place third as a team on Thursday at the Buhler Individual.

As a team the Lady Bullpups scored 22 points which was good for third place out of eight teams. Host Buhler won the invitational with 27 points while Salina Sacred Heart placed second with 23 points. Other teams competing were Wichita Classical (15 points), Salina South (8 points), Valley Center (8 points), Clay Center (7 points), and Concordia (3 points).

“At the end of the day, I felt like we are still trying to play a complete tournament consistently this year,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “We started off the day really well with everyone of our girls winning their first-round match and making it to the semifinals in every division.”

Carley Malm had a strong day at #2 Singles as she finished 2-1 to place second, while both #1 Doubles duo of CeAnna Allen and Perrin Schneider and #2 Doubles tandem of Taylor Berger and Maddie Dobson also went 2-1 to finish second as well.

At #1 Singles, Sydney Achilles finished 1-2 to place fourth.

Coach Brown continued his post invitational reflections by adding, “To go a step further we were all tied up with Buhler to be playing in the finals for three of the divisions as well as them and we also went on to play in the third place match in our #1 Singles division. But as well as we started and played in the middle of the invitational, we just did not win the big ones! To play for three championships and walk away with three runner ups along with a fourth-place finish it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth at the end of the day. Essentially, we were 0-4 to finish the day which always hurts you in team points.”

Coach Brown concluded his comments by saying, “The good thing is it leaves us hungry to improve and come back stronger and better than before. Even though we did not maybe win during the medal round, I truly feel like we are starting to do some things that will pay dividends in the long run. It is just a matter of doing them consistently throughout the tournament.”

The Lady Bullpup netters are not scheduled to return to the competitive court until Saturday, September 26, when they compete in Wichita at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational.
