UNRUH, PTACEK, SCHMIDT, SCHLOSSER, HUFF LEAD WILDCATS

BENNINGTON – The Moundridge football team scored their first victory of the young 2020 season in a wild 48-38 win on the road at Bennington on Friday.

Considering the Wildcats had been outscored 108-6 in their first two games, putting 48 points on the scoreboard was a huge step forward.

After Bennington put the first points on the board, Moundridge offense drove down to where Braden Schmidt could pound his way into the end zone from 2 yards out. After Brayden Conquest barreled in for the two-point conversion, the Wildcats were tied at 8-8 before the host Bulldogs scored again in the final seconds of the quarter to take back the lead at 16-8.

The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter with Corbin Unruh connecting with Jon Schlosser for a huge 45-yard scoring pass and then Conquest getting into the end zone from five yards out for the Wildcats two scores. Not being able to connect on either of their two-point conversions, Moundridge stumbled fell behind by 10 at 30-20 before Unruh connected again for a scoring pass, this time a 21 yarder to Kase Ptacek and with a two-point conversion the Wildcats went into the halftime break only trailing by two at 30-28.

With the two teams trading touchdowns in the third quarter and Moundridge failing in their two-point conversion, the Wildcats went into the final 12 minutes of play trailing 38-34.

A six-yard scoring run by Unruh and then a 30-yard scoring pass from Unruh to Joseph Schrag in the final quarter gave the Wildcats their first victory of the season.

The game was played as close as the score as Moundridge covered 305 yards in offense on 50 plays while Bennington ran up 280 yards on 60 plays. While Bennington did most of their work on the ground (246 yards rushing to just 34 passing), the Wildcats had a solid balance in their offensive attack as they threw for 132 yards while rushing for 173. The one stickler for Moundridge came in penalties as they were flagged seven times for 60 yards while Bennington was flagged just once for five.

Individually, Moundridge was led by quarterback Corbin Unruh as he threw for 130 yards and three scores while leading the Wildcats in rushing with another 70 yards and one more score. Braden Schmidt rolled up 61 yards on the ground while Jon Schlosser covered 61 yards on two pass receptions.

Defensively, Kase Ptacek led the Wildcats with a whopping 10 tackles, while Joaquin Huff recorded nine and Schlosser had seven-and-a-half.

Moundridge will look to continue the winning next Friday, September 25 when they travel to Medicine Lodge. Medicine Lodge will come into the game 0-2 after losing Friday to Macksville 46-36.
