NEWTON – The McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball ‘A’ team got their second win of the season with when they split a pair of matches in Newton on Monday while the ‘B’ team won both of their matches.

For the ‘A’ team, the Junior Lady Pups lost a pair of tough fought sets to Hutchinson (18-25, 23-25) before getting their second victory of the season with a straight set (25-17, 25-17) win over Newton. The ‘A’ team is now 2-4 for the season.

“We did some things really well tonight,” explained 8th grade Head Coach Shelley Bohme. “Our defense and tip coverage were great, and we did a nice job of getting the ball to our hitters. We are starting to get some blocks and more touches on blocks. We continue to struggle with serving, missing a total of eight serves against Hutchinson, and unforced errors. We need to work on staying mentally tough and making smart decisions. I was proud of how the girls bounced back after the loss to Hutchinson to get the big win against Newton.”

The 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team stayed unbeaten at 6-0 by defeating Hutchinson in three sets (20-25, 25-17, 15-12) and then taking down Newton in straight sets (25-14, 16-15).

In her post match reflections, ‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham noted, “After a shaky start, we came away with another pair of wins. We tried out a new rotation tonight, with some girls playing new or different positions, and I appreciate the girls for being flexible and adapting.”

The McPherson Middle School Junior Lady Pup 8th grade spikers will return to the competitive court next Monday, September 28 when they travel to Newton for a quad.
