ELYRIA – It was a rough evening for the Elyria Christian volleyball team as they hosted both Burrton and Canton/Galva on Thursday and suffered lengthy, three set losses to both.

Against Burrton the Lady Eagles won a hard, tough 27-25 first set before spinning their wheels and losing the second set 12-25 and then finishing out the match with another hard, tough three-point loss, 22-25.

Ryland Hawkinson had a big match as she recorded 11 digs while both Kylee Penner and Kilynn Starburg each had six kills.

“I have really got to give kudos to Kylie Cass and Alexus Swenson tonight,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Jayme Gardner. “Our setter was out sick, and these two back row players stepped in and did a good job of setting for us. Our passing against Burrton was all over the place and we made those two work hard, but they really showed a lot of drive.”

Against cross-county rival Canton/Galva, the Lady Eagles once again went three sets, losing the first set 12-25, then bouncing back to score a two-point, 25-23 second set win before losing the final set of the match 15-25.

Once again, Ryland Hawkinson had a big match as she made six kills, recorded seven digs, and got credit for five blocks. Kylee Penner added six kills, three blocks and seven digs, and Julia Allen pitched in with 13 digs and a pair of service aces.

Coach Gardner concluded her post triangular reflections by saying, “Our game against Burrton really set the stage for Canton/Galva. Our passing was just not there tonight. We moved some players around and tried new things, but mentally we could not get into it. Kylie Cass did another good job of setting and giving our hitters the ball, and Canton/Galva did a great job of making sure the ball did not touch the floor. We are now at the point of the season where we have to decide what team we want to be, so we have to let tonight make us better and not bring us down.”

The Lady Eagle junior varsity spikers also lost twice, dropping a straight set match to Burrton (14-25, 4-25) and then to Canton/Galva (19-25, 21-25).

Next up for the Elyria Christian volleyball team will be a trip to Wakefield on Saturday, September 26.
