STRUBER, COLLINS, HUFF, MALTBIE LEAD CANTON/GALVA

By William

CANTON – Once again the Canton/Galva football team played like defending state champions as they dominated visiting Bennington at home Friday and ended the game at halftime due to point rules, 66-0.

The Eagles put up a whopping 52 points in the first quarter with four of the scores coming with while just one minute ran off the clock.

Tyson Struber left no question as to why he is considering one of the top players in the state as he took the opening kickoff and scampered 74 yards to the end zone and after Brayden Collins ran for the two-point conversion, the Eagles were already up 8-0 with less than 12 seconds run off the clock.

Over the next seven minutes, Canton/Galva scored two more times on a one-yard run by Brandon Huff and an 18-yard pass from Garrett Maltbie to Struber. With Collins scoring two more two-point conversions, this gave the Eagles a 24-0 advantage with nearly five minutes left in the first quarter.

Over the final two-and-a-half minutes in the quarter the Eagles put four scores on the board with Collins getting two scores on runs of one and four yards while Brandon Huff rambled in from 17 yards out Maltbie connected with Cason Mastre on a 14-yard pass play. This gave Canton/Galva a whopping 52-0 lead heading into the second period of play.

After scoring twice more in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Ryder Norstrom and a three-yard run by Maltbie the Eagles closed out the game at halftime by the point rule with their 66-0 victory.

For the game, Canton/Galva gained just 173 yards on 22 offensive plays while holding Bennington to only 41 yards on 38 offensive attempts, including a minus-five yards on 23 tries to run the ball. Bennington actually had the ball a bit over 29 minutes while the Eagles only needed a little under seven minutes to score 66 points.

The Eagles defense has now held their first four opponents to just six points while the Eagle offense has scored a staggering 230 points or 57.5 points per game.

Individually, Maltbie passed for 61 yards while running for 43 more on just two carries to lead the seemingly unstoppable Eagle offense. Collins ran for 49 yards on seven carries while Huff rumbled for 23 on just three totes. Struber covered 47 yards on two pass receptions.

Defensively Struber had a huge game by recording nine tackles. Thirteen Eagle players put marks by their name under the defensive stats section.

Now 4-0 on the season, the Eagles prep for a huge game next Friday, October 2 when they play host to Little River in a matchup of the states 8 Man Division I top ranked Eagles and number five ranked Redskins who will come into the game 3-1 for the season.
