LYSELL-STEWART, LUCAS, STAMBAUGH LEAD VIKINGS

By William

LINDSBORG – After finally getting some offense rolling a week ago in a win over Hillsboro, the Smoky Valley football team reversed course and struggled moving the ball when needed on Friday and lost a home game with Colby 18-0.

Colby only needed a score in the first and two more in the third to score the win even while missing all three of their extra point attempts.

The visitors outgained the Vikings 279 to 160 in total offense, including 206 yards on the ground while recording 17 first downs to just seven for Smoky Valley. Despite the range of difference in yardage and the final score, Colby only had the ball offensively just over a minute longer than Smoky Valley.

Quarterback Jake Lucas was the main offensive weapon for the Vikings as he led the team in rushing with 54 yards on 11 carries while also throwing for just 29 yards as he connected on just three of eleven passes. Kade Blanchat also ran the ball 11 times for 41 yards while Haven Lysell-Stewart was the lone receiver to catch a pass.

Lysell-Stewart had an outstanding game on the defensive side of the ball as he recorded 13 tackles, which included 10 solo stops and five that accounted for a loss of yardage. Trystan Stambaugh accounted for 6.5 tackles with three being for a loss of yardage and Justin Holt recorded six tackles as well.

5-1-1-0.0-0.0; Vincent Pickering 0.5-0-1-0.0-0.0; Skyler Hopkins 0.5-0-1-0.0-0.0.

Now 1-3 for the season, the Vikings return to the road next Friday, October 2, when they travel out west to play Goodland. Goodland is 2-2 so far in 2020 and lost Friday night 32-6 to Scott City.
