OVERTAKING A BICYCLE TO THE LEFT ON THE ROADWAY
Traffic Stop Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department
This Tuesday, September 29, they are talking about ‘OVERTAKING A BICYCLE ON THE ROADWAY’.
Now that school is back in session with a modified schedule there will be more bicycles on the streets at different times.
We would like to highlight the Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO) on OVERTAKING A BICYCLE.
Additionally, be attentive to young riders who are making their way to and from school during the week.
The Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO) Sec 40 (c)(1)(2) on OVERTAKING BICYCLES ON THE LEFT says:
- The driver of a vehicle overtaking a bicycle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left thereof at a distance of not less than three (3) feet and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken bicycle.
- The driver of a vehicle may pass a bicycle proceeding in the same direction in a no-passing zone with the duty to execute the pass only when it is safe to do so.
- For the bicyclist, be predictable in your movements and remember to follow all traffic laws as if you were another vehicle on the road.
- LOOK TWICE TO SAVE A LIFE!!!
