It continues to be a banner 2020 season for the McPherson Middle School 7th grade volleyball teams as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads went 4-0 this week with a home quad on Monday and a home match with Newton Chisholm on Thursday.

Staying unbeaten this week, the 7th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team now stand at 10-0 for the season and the ‘B’ team is 9-1.

Here are rundowns of the quad matches on Monday and the dual on Thursday:

MONDAY – QUAD with Salina Lakewood, Concordia, and Newton

The 7th grade ‘A’ team defeated Salina Lakewood in straight sets (25-13, 25-13) before having to bounce back from a first set loss to take down Concordia in three sets (19-25, 25-9, 25-13) and then finishing up the day with a straight set domination of Newton (25-14, 25-9).

“The girls had an amazing day of volleyball today,” noted 7th grade Head Coach Abby Bradstreet. “We were able to play a new team we have not seen this season yet with Concordia and they definitely pushed our team to play their absolute best. We had some simple mistakes in our first game against Concordia and had to tweak a few things, but overall, the girls played extremely well. It has been fun to watch them come together as a team and really play off of the strength’s of each other. Our serving was a little rough, but Kynslie Minns, Brooke Doile, Adelyn Barrow, and Andi Buschbom had some amazing streaks throughout the three matches we played. Adelynn Strecker and Jasmyn Evans took some great digs in the back row and Karsen Burris and Ava Romero dominated the net tonight. This team has so much talent and the girls are so diverse in the spots they are able to play. It has been fun to see them try new things and really shine on the court. The girls rose to the challenge oday and are now able to see where we need to grow and get better as a team for the remainder of the season.”

In the ‘B’ team quad, the Junior Lady Pups also won all three matches and did so in straight sets with only two sets being determined by less than three points.

The ‘B’ team defeated Salina Lakewood (25-16, 25-22) before beating Concordia (26-24, 25-10) and then dominating Newton (25-11, 25-8). The three wins gave the ‘B’ team a 9-1 record through Monday.

Coach Chelsey McCasland had much praise to hand out in her post quad reflections, saying, “It took a while for the Junior Lady Pups to find their rhythm and really come together as a team tonight, but we ended strong. After a really tight first set with Concordia, the team really began talking and having fun on the court. Full effort was given, the number of drop balls went down, we got meaningful touches, and the number of successful serves increased. When we communicate, it leads to consecutive pass, set, hit series and we are then tough to stop! I’m looking forward to trying some new rotations in our final two duals as we continue to grow more confident in our ability and fundamental skills.”

THURSDAY – DUAL with Newton Chisholm

The 7th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team rose their record to 10-0 for the season with a total straight set domination of Newton Chisholm, winning 25-13, 25-9.

Head Coach Abby Bradstreet had plenty to talk about during her post dual reflections as she said, “It was such a great day of volleyball for these girls! They played their last home match of the season and it was so great to see them having so much fun on the court today. The girls did an excellent job of communicating while on the court and they are really beginning to mesh well as a team. Our coverage on the net was amazing tonight and our serve receive is improving every game. It is so unfortunate our season has been cut short because these girls have so much talent and potential to do amazing things together. We look forward to our last match of the season.”

In the ‘B’ team match with Newton Chisholm it played out much the same as the ‘A’ team as they also totally dominated the visitors by a straight set (25-8, 25-9) victory.

“What a great night for 7th grade Junior Lady Pup volleyball,” explained Coach Chelsey McCasland. “I am so proud of how the girls came out with a more confident attitude. Once again, there were strong serving streaks from Kamri Shipman-Holbert and Jasmyn Evans with 10 successful serves each while Aurelia Potter had nine, two of which were ace serves. We mixed up our rotation in between sets tonight and the girls have shown that they are adaptable and can play in multiple spots. We have been focusing on good first passes and transitioning off the net in practice this week and both of those seem to be coming more naturally to our players. I can not believe our last game is approaching and I am hoping to end the season strong.”

The 7th grade Junior Lady Pup volleyball teams will close out their shortened season on Monday, October 5th, with a dual on the road at Salina Lakewood.
