KONRADE, DOERKSEN, BLANK LEAD INMAN

SMITH CENTER – Despite a three-touchdown effort in the fourth quarter, the Inman football team closed out their 2020 regular season with a hard fought, 29-22, loss to powerhouse Smith Center.

Smith Center scored once in the second quarter and once in the third quarter to hold a 15-0 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

The Teutons scored three times in the final quarter on two scoring runs by Jace Doerksen and one by Tanner Heckel, but gave up two more scores to Smith Center in taking the loss.

“I was so proud of our guys’ resiliency tonight,” noted Teuton Head Coach Lance Sawyer. “Smith Center will grind the football and our guys were able to stop them in the red zone. The scoring drives for Smith Center came when we gave them field position on turnovers at their 48, 30, 27, and 20. Turnovers, which we have not really had all season, killed us tonight. Even after all the turnovers, we still had a chance to drive the ball for the win at the end of the game but we just came up short.”

While the Inman offense out gained Smith Center 310 to 213 yards for the game, the Teutons turned the ball over four times on two fumbles and a pair of interceptions to go along with 55 yards lost on six penalties.

Smith Center relied heavily on Jake Sasse who carried the ball 36 times for 119 yards and one of their touchdowns.

Coach Sawyer was happy with the play of the defense, saying, “Defensively, I thought our defensive line did really well. Smith Center gets off the ball extremely well and our guys did a good job of keeping our linebackers clean. Kyler Konrade had a really good night with 12 total tackles.”

On offense, Kendyn Blank led the Teuton running attack with 87 yards on nine carries while also covering 35 yards on three pass receptions. Eli Brunk had a breakout game with three key receptions that covered 64 yards and kept drives going.

Jace Doerksen threw for 126 yards on eight completions but did throw a pair of interceptions.
