DERBY – The McPherson Middle School 8th grade Junior Lady Pups basketball team scored a convincing 37-11 victory on the road Thursday at Derby North to open their 2020-21 season.

Due to a lack of numbers, McPherson only played an ‘A’ game.

“The ladies played well for our first time being on the court against some live action,” noted Head Coach TJ Jackson. “With how low our numbers are, practice is tough to give them a lot of full speed looks but the ladies did a nice job of running through the options on most of the offense we have installed.”

Leading the team in scoring was Izabel Backhus who hit double digits in the scorebook with 11 points while Cora Pavlovich just missed double digits with nine and Josie Fitzmorris had six.

Coach Jackson concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Our inbounds play looked very smooth and we had multiple easy buckets due to that. Defensively we will need to step it up as we see stronger competition, but this was a good chance for the ladies to see where we need to improve and still come away with a strong win. We scored enough that all the ladies got a chance to play some quality minutes and that is always a goal of ours.”

The 8th grade Junior Lady Pups will be back on the hardwood on Saturday when they play at Buhler Prairie Hills.

‘A’ TEAM: Izabel Backhus 11; Cora Pavlovich 9; Josie Fitzmorris 6; Addie Harlin 4; Mallorie Cooper 3; Arihanna Koehn 2; Reese Buchman 2.
