CANTON – After spotting Burlingame a touchdown early in the game, the Canton/Galva football team turned the tables and promptly declawed the Bearcats to the tune of a 56-6 victory.

The victory gives the Eagles a 10-0 mark for the season, makes them regional champions and gives them a continued opportunity to repeat as 8-Man Division I state champions by entering the state playoff quarterfinals next Friday where they will battle with Madison, a team who is also 10-0. Madison won on Friday 60-0 over Oswego.

While Burlingame scored early to take a short lived 6-0 lead, the Eagles counter acted with two scored in the first on an 18-yard run by Garrett Maltbie and a 4-yard rumble by Brayden Collins to take a 12-6 advantage into the second quarter.

And what a second quarter it was as Canton/Galva rolled up 44 points with 3 and 23 yard scoring runs by Collins, a 27 yard scamper by Maltbie, an interception return for a score also by Maltbie and two scoring passes by Maltbie covering 17 yards to Tyler Rummel and a 46 yard connection with Tyson Struber.

Maltbie, just a sophomore, had a huge night as he completed five of six passes for 120 yards and two scores, ran for another 58 yards and a pair of touchdowns while intercepting three Bearcat passes and returning the one to the house for yet another score.

Collins finished the night as the Eagles leading rusher with 77 yards on just nine carries while Struber ended up with 72 yards receiving on three pass receptions.

Team wise, the Eagles held the Bearcats to just 122 yards in offense on 41 plays while picking up 256 yards of their own on offense with just 21 plays. Once again Canton/Galva proved to be extremely stingy with the run as they held Burlingame to a meager 19 yards on 17 rushes.

Defensively, Tyson Struber and Brandon Huff lead the Eagles with six and five-and-a-half tackles respectively while Maltbie and Braison Alcala each recorded four.
