DESPITE COVID-19, 25 TOTAL EARNED HONORS

By William

MCPHERSON – According to Nicholas Griggs, McPherson High School Choral Music Director, despite the issues with COVID-19, music has pressed on and 25 McPherson High School band and choir students earned recent honors from the KMEA (Kansas Music Education Association) by using video or audio auditioning.

“COVID-19 has been pretty tough on all of us these past several months,” noted Griggs. “I am proud to work with so many hard working professionals that despite our circumstances, have been dedicated to giving our students great experiences.

Griggs continued by saying, “Some areas have had to make some pretty serious adjustments in order to operate. Music is among those areas that have been hit pretty hard, but we have a great group of students that have preserved with singing through masks, or playing masked up or with bell covers, or other inconveniences. All our Regional, District, and State-Wide Music Competition and Honor Festivals were cancelled this fall, so we are by no means operating with any normalcy, but still yet, we have a bunch of students that have persevered.”

Griggs concluded his comments by adding, “Although our live events were cancelled this fall, the KMEA State Leadership wanted to make sure to honor the audition/selection process for All-State Honor Ensembles next February, 2021. Several McPherson High School Music Students sent in video or audio auditions and were judged and ranked. McPherson High School had several students selected for the South Central KMEA District Honor Ensemble Rosters (despite not having any live event for 2020).”

While the posting of rosters for the KMEA District Honor Band and the South Central KMEA District Honor Orchestra have not been posted, the South Central KMEA District Honor Jazz Band and South Central KMEA District Honor Choir have been and 25 McPherson Music Students were honored.
