CANTON – It was not how the season was supposed to end, but it was how it happened as turnovers plagued the Canton/Galva football team on Friday night and it cost them as they lost 34-24 to unbeaten Madison in the state 8-Man Division I quarterfinals.

The Eagles came into the game having won 25 straight times and 35 of their last 38 games, mostly by precision playing football as they rarely had an issue with turnovers, until Friday night.

Madison rocked the Eagle home crowd at the opening kickoff when they returned it 72 yards for a touchdown and took an exceedingly early 6-0 lead.

Canton/Galva bounced back and played Eagle football by putting three scores up on the scoreboard by the end of the quarter on two scoring passes of 30 and six yards from Garrett Maltbie to Tyson Struber and Brayden Collins and then a 26 yard dash to the end zone by Collins. Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to convert any of their two-point conversions, but still took what seemed to be a commanding 18-6 advantage into the second quarter.

The Bulldogs came right back and put up two scores in the second quarter on an interception return and a five-yard run to take a short lived 20-18 lead. Canton/Galva put one more score on the board when Maltbie connected with Struber for another scoring pass covering 19 yards to give the defending state champions a 24-20 advantage going into the halftime break.

Madison’s defense put the clamps on the Eagles in the second half and with a 32 yard scoring run in the third quarter and a one-yard plunge into the end zone in the fourth, the Bulldogs did when nobody else had done in two seasons – they defeated the Eagles by 10 points, 34-24.

Overall, the Eagles out played the Bulldogs on the stat sheets as they covered 280 yards in 54 offensive plays while Madison had just 192 with 63 offensive snaps. While both teams ran for 129 yards on the ground, it was the turnovers that proved to be the game changer.

Canton/Galva fumbled the ball four times and lost two of them plus throwing four interceptions which gave the Eagles six turnovers in the game while Madison fumbled the ball twice but did recovered both.

Individually the Eagles offense was led by Garrett Maltbie who completed 13-of-28 passes for 151 yards and the three touchdowns while also running for 68 yards on 16 carries. Unfortunately, Maltbie also threw the four interceptions. Brayden Collins chipped in with 53 yards rushing on seven carries while Tyson Struber was Maltbie’s favorite target as he hauled in eight passes for 98 yards.

On defense, five Eagles recorded more than six total tackles led by Conner Koehn with 10.5, Keaton Littrell with 8.5, and Tyson Struber with eight while both Brandon Huff and Tyler Rummel each had 6.5. Canton/Galva tackled Bulldog runners for a loss of yardage nine times in the game, including four by Conner Koehn.
