UNRUH, SCHLOSSER, KAUFMAN TO LEAD MOUNDRIDGE

By William

MOUNDRIDGE – Beginning his 34th season coaching the Moundridge Wildcats boys basketball program, Vance Unrau is eager to get the season started as he returns his entire starting five plus two top reserves from a team that finished only 9-12 overall in 2019-20 before losing in the sub-state quarterfinals to Hutchinson Trinity Catholic.

Despite only winning nine games overall, the Wildcats did perform well in the Heart of America league games as they finished 5-4.

While Coach Unrau worries a bit about depth and knows the team must stay healthy, he is looking forward to counting on seniors Jon Schlosser and Corbin Unruh plus sophomore Landon Kaufman to lead the Wildcats into the 2020-21 season. Those three combined to average 27.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists a game last year.

Moundridge will begin the 2020-21 season on Friday, December 4, when they play at Elyria Christian before playing Hillsboro on Tuesday, December 8, in the Moundridge Pre-Season Basketball Tournament.

WHAT COACH UNRAU SAYS ABOUT THE UPCOMING 2020-21 WILDCAT SEASON?

  • “We have a solid core group of guys that are going to give us some options to play fast.”
  • “We are hoping that means ‘in control’ because I also like some of our options if we settle in a half-court offense.”
  • “I would really like for this team to run multiple defensive looks and use our combination of quickness and length to get stops and steals.”
  • “Depth could be a serious concern for us, so we will have to play smart and be in great physical condition.”
  • “That concern about depth also means that we will need to stay healthy.”
  • “As usual, the recurring theme is that we will play an extremely difficult schedule both in our league and non-league games.”

UPCOMING SEASON SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Play in the HOA – Heart of America League
  • Expected top teams in the HOA for 2020-21 will be Hutchinson Trinity Catholic, Berean Academy, Sedgwick, and Inman.
  • Other top teams that appear on the schedule include Little River, Chapparal, Hillsboro and an appearance in the Canton/Galva Tournament
