COACH SAYS SMOKY VALLEY IS POISED FOR SOME BIG WINS

LINDSBORG – The 2019-20 season did not go as planned for the Smoky Valley Lady Vikings basketball program, but Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege looks to the 2020-21 season with high expectations as they return all five (5) starters plus two other top players, all of whom gained lots of game time experience last season.

Both team captains, Ellie Brumbaugh and Kerington Haxton return to lead the Lady Vikings as they work to improve last season’s 10-11 record.

Here is a season preview of the 2020-21 Smoky Valley Lady Vikings:

OPENING 2 WEEKS OF THE SEASON for the SMOKY VALLEY LADY VIKINGS:

  • Open the season on Friday, December 4 by hosting Abilene.
  • Tuesday, December 8 – on the road at Southeast of Saline.
  • Friday, December 11 – host Concordia.
  • Tuesday, December 15 – on the road at Hesston.
  • Friday, December 18 – host Halstead.

WHAT DOES COACH LARRY VAN DER WEGE BRING TO THE BENCH?

  • This is Coach Van Der Wege’s third (3rd) season as Head Coach of the Smoky Valley Lady Vikings.
  • Coach Van Der Wege has an overall and career record of 10-31.
  • In 2019-20, Coach Van Der Wege coached the Lady Vikings to a 6-5 overall record and 2-7 mark in the CKL (Central Kansas League).
  • The Lady Vikings lost in the first round of the sub-state playoffs.
  • Lady Viking Assistant Coaches are Kimi Lindschield and Lauren Welsch.

WHO DOES RETURN FOR THE LADY VIKINGS?

The Lady Vikings will return five (5) starters:

  • Ellie Brumbaugh, a 5’3” senior who averaged 10.4 points per game in 2019-20 while shooting 30% from the three-point line and being named 2nd Team All-CKL.
  • Kerington Haxton, a 5’5” senior who averaged 6.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game in 2019-20.
  • Breanna Priddy, a 5’9” junior who averaged 7.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in 2019-20.
  • McKinley Johnson, a 5’7” senior who averaged 3.4 points per game in 2019-20.
  • Abby Rose, a 6’0” junior who averaged 3.3 points and 1.1 blocked shots per game in 2019-20.

RETURNEES & NEWCOMER(S) THAT MAY SEE PLAYING TIME?

Among the other returnees/newcomers that Coach Van Der Wege is counting on to contribute are:

  • Claire Broxterman, a 5’9” senior who averaged 2.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 2019-20.
  • Avery Van Der Wege, a 5’5” junior who averaged 1.0 points and 1.2 assists per game in 2019-20.

WHAT COACH VAN DER WEGE IS SAYING ABOUT THE UPCOMING 2020-21 LADY VIKINGS SEASON?

  • “As with every other part of 2020, this year will be unpredictable.”
  • “Our seniors and juniors gained a lot of experience last season.”
  • “While our record does not show how close we were last year in a number of games, against teams that made the state tournament or at least competed well at the end of the season.”
