10 UNDERCLASSMEN TO LEAD THE LADY EAGLES IN 2020-21

ELYRIA – If folks thought the 2019-20 Elyria Christian girls basketball team was young, wait until they see the team of 2020-21 as it has but one senior listed out of 11 players discussed in the media information sheets returned by Lady Eagles Head Coach Greg Fields.

Entering his 8th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles, Coach Fields will continue to look for improvement from a young squad that will be dominated by four juniors, three sophomores and three new incoming freshmen.

Only Claire Adamyk graduated off last seasons team that finished with an even draw of 11 wins and 11 losses, and while Adamyk will be missed in particular with her inside the paint play, the Lady Eagles return a solid group of players with lots of length (as Coach Fields calls it), quickness and speed.

Among the youth will be the return of senior Connie Schott who rang up 10 points and 2 steals per game to start the season before an injury put out for all but the first five games.

The quartet of juniors Kylee Penner, Olivia Peters, and KiLynn Starburg plus sophomore Ryland Hawkinson will return after combining for 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and a whopping 8.6 steals per game last season. Plus, all four of those Lady Eagles list out at five-foot-seven to five-foot-nine with lots of length and quickness.

Add in the threesome of Olivia Clark, Allie Stone and Alexus Swenson in the backcourt and Coach Fields has a solid foundation for a highly productive season.

Coach Fields has acknowledged that each of the girls have spent a lot of time in the off-season working on their game and improving on their weaknesses, all of which will be tested early as the Lady Eagles open the season on Friday against Moundridge before playing three games next week as part of the Goessel Bluebird Classic Tournament.

COACH FIELDS THOUGHTS ON THE RETURNING PLAYERS:

  • Referencing Kylee Penner = “Kyle is a very strong player who plays bigger than her size and is capable of being a big threat offensively in every game.”
  • Referencing Olivia Peters = “Olivia Peters is extremely quick, and one of the best defensive players in our league, plus she can score a lot of points in transition.”
  • Referencing KiLynn Starburg = “KiLynn is another great defender because of her aggressiveness and length.”
  • Referencing Olivia Clark = “Olivia Clark is an incredibly hard worker who is also an impactful defensive player. She has been working on her outside and mid-range shooting to be more of an offensive threat this season.”
  • Referencing Ryland Hawkinson = “Ryland came in as just a freshman in 2019-20 and had several double-digit games against some of our tougher opponents. Ryland has the ability to be a big impact player for us this season, both offensively and defensively.”
  • Referencing Allie Stone = “Allie is another player who is very tough while also being a fast-defensive minded player. Allie made some great plays towards the end of the 2019-20 season that turned some close games toward our direction.”
  • Referencing Alexus Swenson = “Alexus worked her way into the rotation last season because of her outside shooting. Alexus has worked hard in the off-season on improving her shot even more while also working extra on her ball handling.”

RETURNEES & NEWCOMER(S) THAT MAY SEE PLAYING TIME?

Among the other returnees and newcomers that Coach Fields is counting on to contribute are:

  • Macy Reiff, a 5’5” freshman.

COACH FIELDS THOUGHTS ON THE NEWCOMERS:

  • “We have several in-coming freshman for the 2020-21 season and they have really impressed us this summer.”

WHAT COACH FIELDS IS SAYING ABOUT THE UPCOMING 2020-21 LADY EAGLE SEASON?

GENERAL OUTLOOK:

  • “The 2019-20 season was definitely a year of what I call rounding the corner as we have had a group of young girls who have gone from a five-win season to an 11-win season within one year.”
  • “We still have a long way to go to be consistent on the offensive side of the ball, but we are getting more mature and I know several of the girls have been working hard to improve their game.”

OVERALL OUTLOOK FOR THE 2020-21 SEASON:

  • “The 2020-21 season should be entertaining with fast paced games, as we will utilize our speed and athleticism.”
  • “While we still do not have a lot of height – we do have a lot of length and speed.”
  • “In 2019-20 we once again set a school record for the number of steals we made as a team, and if we are able to play that full schedule of games, then I expect that school record to be broken once again in the upcoming 2020-21 season.”
