BACKHUS, COOPER, WILSON LEAD CHARGE

By William

Despite the Thanksgiving break, the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball teams hit the hardwood in stride and swept both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ games from Derby on Tuesday.

The ‘A’ team scored an 11-point, 33-22 victory while the ‘B’ team won by 13, 24-11.

Both games showed tremendous balance as each game had seven girls put points by their name in the scorebook.

Next up for the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups will be on Thursday, December 2 when they go on the road to Hutchinson.

SUMMARY OF THE 8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM 33-22 VICTORY:

Head Coach TJ Jackson was proud of the performance on Tuesday, noting, “We could not be happier with how the girls played coming off a break and finding out right before our games that we would only have 10 players.”

Izabel Backhus led the team with 13 points while Mallorie Cooper chipped in with eight.

Coach Jackson concluded his reflections by saying, “A team came out slow and we struggled on offense. As we got further along, they started to make better decisions with the ball, and play far more aggressively in all parts of the game. Really proud of their ability to finish strong. I would love to see us stay out of the foul trouble we were in and that will improve as well.”

MCPHERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING:

Izabel Backhus – 13

Mallorie Cooper – 8

Cora Pavlovich – 4

Alivia Villalobos – 2

Reese Buchman – 2

Addie Harlin – 2

Josie Fitzmorris – 2

SUMMARY OF THE 8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘B’ TEAM 24-11 WIN:

In the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ game the scoring was well balanced as seven individuals shared putting points on the board with all getting between two and five points.

“The girls came out and played really good basketball after being on break for about a week and only having one practice to prepare,” explained ‘B’ team Coach Courtney Heinen. “We were also down one player and the girls adjusted well to that.”

Alix Wilson led the team with five points while Josie Fitzmorris, Addie Harlin, and Reece Buchman each had four.

Coach Heinen finished up her reflections by adding, “I am very happy with how the girls were able to execute our offense and make adjustments when they needed to. We were aggressive on both offense and defense and that is something we have struggled on in our past games. Defensively, the girls played great. Their rotations in our zone were great. They were able to get some steals and limit shots. Only thing we need to clean up a bit is our fouling.”
