UNRUH, STUCKY LEAD EAGLES

KAUFMAN, SCHLOSSER, CHURCHILL TOP WILDCATS

ELYRIA – Poor shooting costs the Moundridge boys basketball program too many times on Friday as they suffered a season opening loss to the Elyria Christian Eagles, 38-30.

The Wildcats shot just 28% from the field, including a woeful 1-19 from beyond the three-point line and that cost them dearly, even as Elyria shot just 38% from the field and hit only four of twelve from beyond the thre-point arc.

Elyria jumped out to a 10-5 first quarter lead before pushing it out to 20-12 at the halftime break. After the break, the Wildcats played the Eagles dead even on the scoreboard but were unable to make up the final eight-point difference.

Filling in for Head Coach Vance Unrau who was out of town for a wedding, Courtney Moddelmog summed up the Wildcat performance with the obvious, saying, “We played good enough defensively except for rebounding, but we can not shoot 1-19 from the three-point line and expect to win.”

On the other hand, the Eagles Head Coach Zach Goodrich noted, “It is nice to have a group of boys that have played at the varsity level the past three years and have learned how to handle pressure from a quality opponent. We knew tonight would be tough against a well-coached Moundridge team but we were able to see some shots go in early in the first quarter and create some interior looks after the Wildcats picked up the pressure.”

For the Wildcats, no players dominated the offensive stats as Landon Kaufman led the team in scoring with nine points while both Logan Churchill and Jon Schlosser each chipped in with eight.

Ben Unruh had a big game for the Eagles as he recorded a double-double to start the season by leading the team both in scoring with 11 points and rebounding with 10 boards. Zach Stucky also reached double digits in scoring with 10 while Josef Hobson added seven. Both Keyan Wiggers and Bret Anderson helped Elyria’s big edge in the paint by both pulling down seven rebounds.

Eagle Coach Goodrich concluded his post-game reflections by taking up his players and adding, “Ben (Unruh) was terrific for us. He is a competitor and played with a toughness you need against a team like Moundridge. He finished with a double-double while we did what he does well, and we will be looking for that effort from him all season. Zach (Stucky) was steady for us and kept everyone on the same page throughout the game. Josef (Hobson), Bret (Anderson), and Keyan (Wiggers) were all solid for us defensively as they did the little things well that we have been practicing, and we hope with each game we will get better and better defending as a full unit. Overall, this was a great effort by this group of kids.”

Next up for the Elyria Christian boys will be a tangle with Burrton on Monday, December 7 as part of the Goessel Bluebird Classic Basketball Tournament, while the Moundridge boys will begin hosting their own Pre-Season Tournament with a game on Tuesday, December 8 with Hillsboro.
