DARRAH TOPS SCORING, COLLINS GETS DOUBLE-DOUBLE

By William

HOPE – While the Canton/Galva boys basketball team seemed to be full command early, Rural Vista powered back and forced the Eagles into overtime before they were able to bring home a seven-point, 62-55 win on Friday evening.

The Eagles rang up a 13-7 first quarter lead before outscoring Rural Vista 21-8 in the second period and take a seemingly commanding 19-point, 34-15, lead into the halftime break.

Rural Vista turned the tables in the third quarter and outscored Canton/Galva 19-5 to pull within six going into the final quarter of play where they pulled even with the Eagles at 50-50 at the end of regulation play. The Eagles then pulled away in the overtime to gain the victory.

“I was happy with a lot of the things we did in the first half,” noted Eagles first-year Head Coach Larry O’Connor. “But I was not happy about the shot selection, the missed layups, and the free throws, all of which killed us in the second half.”

Christian Darrah led the Eagles on offense as he dropped in 21 points, Brayden Collins joined him in double digits with 17 while Brayden Minson just missed with nine.

Collins had a double double as he also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Darrah, Conner Koehn and Garrett Maltbie grabbed nine, eight and seven rebounds respectively as well. Overall, the Eagles gathered in 50 rebounds of which 20 were on the offensive boards while 30 came on the defensive end.

Cameron Capuzzano was a single man issue for Canton/Galva as he led Rural Vista with 21 points while dominating in the paint with 22 rebounds.

Other highlights in the stats for the Eagles came in steals as they swiped the ball a whopping 16 times and gained 39 points of their scoring off turnovers.

One must note that the Eagles won the game despite not having last year’s hardwood star Tyson Struber playing.

Coach O’Connor concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “It is going to take time to adjust to playing faster, harder, and decision making at this game speed. But I was extremely excited about the way we handled adversity in the second half and the potential of this team is extremely exciting. We will get back in the gym and get to work to get better every day.”

The coming week will find the Eagles playing up to three games as they participate in the Goessel Bluebird Basketball Classic.
