BURRTON – The Elyria Christian boys basketball team powered out to a huge early lead and never looked back as they blew out Burrton with a 34-point, 47-13 win on Monday in the first game of the Goessel Bluebird Classic Tournament.

Not only did the Eagles plant 20 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter, they also held Burrton to just two points and then held them to just two more points in the second quarter while adding seven to their scorebook to take a whopping 27-4 halftime advantage. Elyria added another 20 points in the final two quarters while Burrton did do enough to break into double digits.

“We are starting to figure some things out and play at a good pace,” explained Eagle Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “I was pleased with our attention to detail and finding the right looks. I believe we can be better with the ball, and I am hoping as we get more games under our belt that we will see that improvement.”

As a team, the Eagles made 14 more field goals in the game than Burrton while out rebounding them by 12 (27-15) to dominate under the basket. Elyria’s defense was solid as they totaled 15 steals in the game, led by five each by Kaden Aroum and Zach Stucky.

Talking about his team, Coach Goodrich continued by saying, “Keyan (Wiggers) was solid for us under the basket and finished with ten points and four rebounds. Ben (Unruh) is continuing to learn how to make the right cuts and finding the open driving lanes while both Bret (Anderson) and Zach (Stucky) were solid tonight on both ends of the floor.”

Wiggers led the Eagles in scoring with 10 while Anderson chipped in with eight as a total of eight Elyria players put at least three points by their name in the scorebook to show a highly balanced offensive performance.

Goodrich concluded his game reflections by adding, “Overall, tonight was a great effort by the entire team, and we need to keep the focus on getting better every contest.”

Next up for the Eagles will be to host Goessel on Tuesday in their second game of the Goessel Bluebird Classic Tournament.
