ELYRIA – The Elyria Christian girls basketball team earned their second win in two days playing in the Goessel Bluebird Classic when they put the hammer on Goessel Tuesday and scored a 19-point, 43-24 victory.

Consistency was the word for the play of the Lady Eagles as they scored 10 points in each of the first two quarters to take a 20-12 lead into the halftime break and then returned in the final two quarters to put up 11 and 12 points respectively to earn the win.

“I was very happy to get a win tonight against a physical Goessel team,” said Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “It seemed like one of those nights where everything was going against us from foul trouble to struggling with finishing around the basket. It can be difficult to play the day after another game, but a lot of our struggles were due to the highly active defense from Goessel.”

Kylee Penner and Ryland Hawkinson did much of the work for the Lady Eagles as they finished with 16 and 14 points respectively while both grabbed six rebounds. Hawkinson also made four steals while Penner swiped the ball three times. Allie Stone led the team in steals with nine while both her and KiLynn Starburg finished with four assists.

Speaking of his team, Coach Fields continued his post-game reflections by adding, “Ryland (Hawkinson) and Kylee (Penner) were solid for us on offense again tonight. They are becoming a consistent force inside while they both played great defense as well. Allie (Stone) has made great strides this year and she is playing well beyond her years while becoming a leader on the court. She was a force on defense tonight with nine steals and she has done a great job of taking care of the ball in the last two games.”

As a team, while the Goessel defense caused issues at moments for Elyria, it was Elyria who Goessel to turn the ball over 36 times, with the Lady Eagles making 25 of those on steals.

Coach Fields concluded his reflections by noting, “This was a good team win tonight as everyone who played made major contributions. We are looking forward to having a few days of practice to prepare for the championship game on Saturday.”
