KAUFMAN HAS HUGE GAME FOR MOUNDRIDGE

By William

MOUNDRIDGE – In the Moundridge Pre-season Tournament, the host Moundridge boys played four quarters of consistent basketball on their way to a Tuesday win over Hillsboro 59-48.

After holding a slim three-point, 25-22, lead going into the halftime break, the Wildcats put a bit of a cushion on their lead by putting 19 more points on the board in the third stanza while holding Hillsboro to just 13 to take a nine-point lead into the final quarter where they held on to their lead to get the victory.

“I told the kids that a lot of what we needed to do to improve from a poor performance at Elyria on Friday night was not going to take talent,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau. “It was going to be about toughness, effort, being more patient, and rebounding. Those pieces were a big part of our win tonight.”

It helped that Moundridge went to the free throw line 22 times to just nine for Hillsboro and with the Wildcats making 15 of those to Hillsboro just connecting on five, you find a point difference like on the scoreboard. The Wildcats also dominated in the paint as they out rebounded Hillsboro 30-13.

Coach Unrau continued his game reflections by saying, “We attacked their press and got good penetration for high percentage shots. We showed good patience on offense and attacked the basket, and that really helps getting to the free throw line. Can not single anyone out because all of guys were difference makers tonight.”

While the coach gave credit to the entire team, it was Landon Kaufman who had the huge night as he put 26 points in the scorebook while also getting five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jon Schlosser nearly had a double-double as he scored 12 on six-of-seven from the field while leading the team in rebounds with nine. Logan Churchill, Korbin Wedel and Corbin Unruh combined for 19 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals and four blocked shots to compliment the big game by Kaufman.

The Wildcats will now face Inman next in the preseason Moundridge tournament and Coach Unrau concluded his reflections by adding, “Inman features a lot of athletes and they are deeper than we are at all positions so
