BOUGHFMAN, RENKEN, ECK LEAD LITTLE RIVER

By William

Despite having an extremely young team, the Little River girls basketball team scored a dominating 44-point, 66-22 victory over Canton/Galva in the Goessel Bluebird Classic on Monday.

After rolling out to a 12-point first quarter lead, the Lady Redskins put another 21 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to take a whopping 26-point, 38-12 advantage into the halftime break. And it did not stop there as they then outscored the Lady Eagles 28-10 in the final two quarters to take the dominating win.

“We have a very young team,” noted new Lady Redskin Head Coach Brent Clark. “I wasn’t sure how we would come out and play in our first game, but they came out and played very well.”

Playing very well indeed, Little River has no seniors on their roster and the scorebook for the game with Canton/Galva had three juniors, two sophomores and four freshman putting points on the scoreboard, including five who reached double digits in an extremely balanced offensive attack.

Juniors Lily Boughfman and MeKenzie Renken along with freshman Alaina Eck led the Lady Redskins by all scoring 11 points while Aubrey Olander and Mea DeBaere, a freshman and sophomore, each chipped in with 10.

Boughfman led the team in the paint with seven rebounds while sophomore Courtney Stansbury grabbed five. Boughfman also recorded four assists, took four steals, and blocked four shots for a huge all-around game.

Coach Clark continued his first game reflections by saying, “We shot the ball very well and created several turnovers with our press and played solid defense. I am extremely excited about this team; we will only get better.”

Indeed, the Lady Redskins did shoot very well by hitting 61% of their shots from the field while sharing the ball offensively enough to record 18 assists and playing defense solid enough to record 15 steals.

Next up for the Lady Redskins will be on Friday night when they play at home against Central Christian.
