BACKHUS, PAVLOVICH TOP SCORERS

SALINA – It was a rough way to lose, by just a single bucket but that is what happened to the McPherson Middle School 8th grade girls ‘A’ basketball team on Thursday in a battle on the road at Salina Lakewood.

Countering the heartbreaking 32-30 loss by the ‘A’ team, the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team scored a seven-point, 31-24 victory.

In the ‘A’ game, Izabel Backhus led the team in scoring with 12 while Cora Pavlovich chipped in with eight.

“Last time we played Salina Lakewood, they were down a few players and we took advantage of that,” explained ‘A’ team Coach TJ Jackson. “This time we were down some players and five girls played 90% of the game before our sixth player came in after one player fouled out. Salina Lakewood had the luxury of playing ten players.”

Speaking of his players, Coach Jackson concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “I told the girls I’m not about moral victories, but they should absolutely still walk away from this game proud of themselves and we as coaches can’t express enough of how proud we are of them. They continue to get better on both ends of the court and are continually looking more like a team.”

Cora Pavlovich led the ‘B’ game in scoring with nine points while Arihanna Koehn contributed seven in the teams win.

According to ‘B’ team Coach Courtney Heinen, “The girls came out ready to play. We made some adjustments due to being down two girls, but that didn’t hinder their performance. They were aggressive on both offense and defense, and that is something they are continuing to get better at every day.”

Next up for the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups will come on Monday, December 14 when they play host to Maize South.
